Your starter is a small motor that gets its power from the battery. A starter relay is located between the battery and the starter motor. If anything goes wrong with either of these components, your car won’t start. You’ll need to bring it to Victory CDJR and have it checked out by our expert technicians.
Indications of a Bad Starter
If something sounds off when you try to your vehicle, it could be your starter. You may hear a clicking sound when you turn the key or otherwise activate the ignition switch. It won’t always make the clicking sound, but it may come out as a whirring or grinding sound instead. It could also die without any sound.
If you turn the key or activate your ignition switch and your dashboard lights come on but the engine doesn’t turn over, it could also be a starter issue.
If you turn the key and nothing happens even after you try to jump-start the engine, this could also be an indication of a starter problem. If a jumpstart or charger won’t fire up the engine, it will take a trained technician to get you back on the road.
Your starter is part of an electrical system powered by your battery. If the car doesn’t start after multiple attempts, you can cause a circuit to short or a fuse to blow. Continuing this process can cause the starter to overheat with smoke coming from your engine.
Another obvious sign of starter trouble is if you open the hood and look at the starter and it is covered in oil, then your starter will have an issue.
How do you know where to find the starter? If you drive a RWD vehicle, you can locate the starter on the passenger side below the exhaust manifold. If you drive a FWD vehicle, you can find the starter on the driver’s side above the transmission or under the exhaust manifold. In some vehicles, you may locate it under the intake manifold. If you open the hood and see the starter under a layer of oil, then you have an oil leak. If that isn’t fixed, you may find that you are paying much more than you intended with a larger problem.
