The Job of Spark Plugs
These seemingly insignificant components of your starter system are like tiny powerhouses that are given the important task of conveying electrical current from the ignition coil into the combustion chamber. The electrical spark ignites the air/fuel mixture that creates tiny explosions which create the power for your vehicle to operate. Without the spark of the plugs, your engine cannot convert fuel into mechanical power so you can get from point A to point B.
Anatomy of a Spark Plug
Each part of your spark plug plays a distinct role to ensure that your engine operates efficiently.
- Insulator: Usually composed of ceramic, this component protects the end of the spark plug that creates the spark.
- Electrodes: The end of the plug is the very tip, and the electrodes here must withstand high temperatures and corrosive conditions to create sparks.
- Shell: This component is usually comprised of metal, and it provides threading so the new spark plug can be screwed into the engine’s cylinder head where it is secured.
- Gasket: This component is not present in all spark plugs, but for those that do have it, the purpose is to get a tight seal with the cylinder head.
Your spark plugs are made with materials that provide increased efficiency for fuel and emission purposes. A properly tuned spark plug enables clean combustion and reduces the chances of misfires and undue engine stress.
Spark Plug Replacements
Your spark plugs are screwed into the engine’s cylinder head(s). Most vehicles have one plug per cylinder (a 4-cylinder has four, a 6-cylinder has six, and so on). When it is time to replace your worn spark plugs, it is important to exchange the old ones for quality new ones to ensure your car, truck, SUV, or minivan continues to operate efficiently. If you are not sure if it is time to replace your plugs, there are some symptoms that may be a clue.
Signs That You Need to Replace Your Spark Plugs
- Car won’t start.
- Check Engine Light or misfire code.
- Check Engine Light begins flashing during acceleration or a misfire code.
- Vehicle backfires.
- Reduced power or fuel economy.
- Vehicle idles roughly or there are unexplained vibrations.
- Vehicle fails state emissions test.
Note: Even if just one spark plug is bad, it is better to replace the whole set according to the size of your engine.
