History
University of Ottawa’s origins date back to the 1860s, with a strong heritage and decorated overall history. The founding of the University began with Baptist Missionaries working with the Native American tribes near the banks of the Marais Des Cygnes River, the region that would eventually become Ottawa, Kansas. A school was soon founded to provide aid to local residents, including aspects such as medical needs, counseling, education, and business agents. The native tribe endowed nearly 20,000 acres of land for the founding of the University, and a staff and governing board of directors were soon established. Since 1905, the University has been strongly affiliated with the American Baptist Church of the USA.
