Ottawa High School
Tucked among the quiet residential neighborhoods of the east side of Ottawa, Kansas is Ottawa High School, which helps educate young scholars as their last step before attending college. Although the building itself is relatively new, the original Ottawa High School was built in 1917, from a school district that was first recognized in 1864. The most recent school building was built in 1968, with a series of add-ons and remodels that have formed this prominent high school as we know it today. Ottawa High School has a range of exciting academics and extracurricular activities to best prepare its students for adulthood, and an athletics program available for everyone.
Athletics
Ottawa High School competes with local schools in the region from Baldwin, Bonner Springs, Eudora, Paola, Spring Hill, and Tonganoxie under its mascot, the Cyclones. The Cyclones are comprised of a range of sports separated by distinct spring, fall, and winter seasons, with multiple options available for both boys and girls. The teams participate in multiple sports including golf, tennis, soccer, football, basketball, wrestling, tennis, track and field, baseball, volleyball, and cross country. Ottawa High School’s athletic program has a decorated history of statewide championship victories in cross country, track and field, softball, and basketball.
Academics
Ottawa High School offers an excellent academics program available to each of its students to help prepare them for the road ahead. The high school adheres to a state-required curriculum, but also offers a range of extracurricular classes geared towards specific interests to best nurture the talent of each student. The high school also offers varying options of college preparation courses on campus and has a local partnership with the Neosho County Community College to offer college-level classes. Career and Technical training programs are among the highlight of the school’s offerings, which gives students pathways to several amazing career choices including agricultural sciences, early childhood development, family and community services, digital communications, marketing, and so much more.
Student Body
Home to around 700 students. Ottawa High School offers a ton of extra activities for everyone to cater to special interests across the board. Additional programs offered include choir, marching band, women’s chorus, debate, and forensics. The high school also offers several after-school clubs that compete with other high schools including the science Olympiad, scholar’s bowl, chess club, and more. OHS also offers a ton of performing arts specialty programs, and along with it, every season has a special event including a fall musical, spring play, and a variety show.
