Headlights Service at Victory Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM of Ottawa

When you drive at night it’s easy to see how important your headlights are. They are your early warning system to keep you from hitting animals, debris, other vehicles, and other things that may be on the road at night. Like all things though, they wear out in time, and when they do you need to replace the bulbs. In many vehicles, this may be an easy task if you can get to the bulb. There are many vehicles where this can be a challenge that requires you to work hard at getting through the housing to where the burned-out bulb is located. If you live near Gardner, Overland Park, or Emporia, you can avoid the hassle and get your headlights checked out, bulbs replaced, and lights adjusted professionally at Victory Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM of Ottawa.

What Does Headlight Service Include?

Usually, if a bulb goes out, it is a simple fix, but your lack of lights may not always mean replacing a bulb. Other issues can cause light malfunctions like battery problems, other electrical issues, alternator malfunctions, and more. At Victory CDJR of Ottawa, our technicians can inspect your headlight system to determine if there are any underlying causes for little or no headlights. We offer the following headlight services regardless of whether a bulb burned out or something more has happened.

  • Bulb replacement
  • Electrical System Inspections: Checking fuses, relays, wiring, modules, switches, and power sources
  • Checking the igniter in your xenon (HID) headlights
  • Headlight adjustments to aim them properly for maximum range and efficiency

Common Headlight Problems

Although most headlight issues can be traced to a burned-out bulb, other problems can develop, so it’s good to be aware of what those problems are.

  • One Headlight: Generally, this is a bulb burning out, but if that doesn’t fix the problem, then it is worth having fuses and wires checked.
  • Low Beams or High Beams don’t work: Check if bulbs are burned out first, then look at relays and switches.
  • Both headlights stop working: This is most likely a problem with the electrical system.
  • Dim Headlights: If they come on but are dim, this could be a charging system, worn-out bulbs, or foggy lenses.

Headlight Types

There are three major types of headlights:

  • Halogen: These are incandescent lights that use tungsten filaments surrounded by argon and nitrogen gases. These are the least expensive, and they are also dimmable, but they use a lot of energy, generate heat, and are short-lived.
  • HID (High-Energy Discharge): Also called xenon lights, they work like neon lights only using xenon gas. These last up to eight times longer than halogens and they are twice as bright. They illuminate a larger area with less energy, and they are costlier. They can blind other motorists if not installed properly.
  • LED: Among the most popular on the market currently, they balance the pros and cons of the other two types. They offer better brightness and coverage than HID lights and use less energy than HIDs, but they are also five times the price of HID lights.
