Brake Pads Service at Victory Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM of Ottawa

One of the most important safety features of your vehicle is your brakes. Most modern vehicles are equipped with disc brakes, though some have drum brakes on the rear axle. If you live in or around Lawrence, Topeka, or Kansas City, you can get your brake pads professionally serviced at Victory Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM of Ottawa.

In a disc brake system, when you apply pressure to your brake pedal there is fluid in the system that creates hydraulic pressure in the lines and hoses. Pressure then pushes a piston in a brake caliper on the knuckle of the brake that extends around the brake rotors. Attached to plates on the knuckle is an inboard and outboard brake pad which is affixed to the plates. Applying your brakes forces these pads against the brake rotor and the friction from the pads slows and stops your vehicle.

Over time, these brake pads wear down from the extreme heat and pressure that braking causes. Imagine how much force is applied against the rotors every time you brake, especially at higher speeds. Eventually, the brake pads wear down too much and need to be replaced for them to remain effective in slowing and stopping.

Types of Brake Pads

In general, brake pads are all similarly made. They all have a metal base and a kind of metal backing plate to which various friction materials are bonded. Some materials last longer than others depending on the type of pad and the thickness of the pads. Most pads are between 8/32-inch and 12/32-inch in thickness, but over time these pads wear down, and when the friction material is reduced to 3/32-inch, it is time to have them replaced. There are three options available for brake pads.

  • Organic or non-metallic: This type is composed of man-made compounds like aramid, sintered glass, and cellulose with other compounds in various amounts. This material is softer than the others, so they are quieter, but because of that they also wear out faster.
  • Semi-metallic: Middle-grade pads composed of a combination of metals like copper, iron, or steel with non-metallic components like graphite and other fillers. These can be noisy, but they last longer, and they are harder on your rotors.
  • Ceramic: These are considered the best type by many standards. They last the longest, are easier on the rotors, and are relatively quiet. They are made with combined elements like clay and porcelain with copper fibers.

How Do I Know If It Is Time to Replace My Brake Pads?

There are some pretty recognizable signs that your pads are worn too much, beginning with less stopping power. There are also other signs such as:

  • Squealing noises when slowing or stopping
  • Grinding sounds when driving or braking
  • Visible grooves on the rotor surface
  • Pulsations in the pedals when applying brakes
  • Pulling to one side when you slow or stop
